This book, meticulously researched and written by a team of investigative journalists, unveils the untold story of the Concrete Brotherhood, from their humble beginnings as a small-time street gang to their rise as one of the most feared criminal organizations in the United States. Through exclusive interviews with former members, law enforcement officials, and other insiders, it provides a chilling glimpse into the dark underbelly of an illicit empire.

The Early Years

The roots of the Concrete Brotherhood can be traced back to the early 20th century, when a group of Italian immigrants settled in the slums of New York City's Lower East Side. These immigrants, who had left their poverty-stricken homeland in search of a better life, soon found themselves drawn into the world of crime as a means of survival.

One of the most prominent figures in the early years of the Concrete Brotherhood was Salvatore Maranzano, a Sicilian immigrant who arrived in New York in 1921. Maranzano quickly rose through the ranks of the criminal underworld, becoming one of the most powerful mob bosses in the city. Under his leadership, the Concrete Brotherhood expanded its operations into a wide range of criminal activities, including racketeering, bootlegging, and murder.

The Castellammarese War

In 1930, a bloody power struggle known as the Castellammarese War erupted within the New York Mafia. The war was sparked by a conflict between Maranzano and Charles "Lucky" Luciano, a young and ambitious mobster who sought to modernize the Mafia and break free from Maranzano's iron-fisted rule.

The war lasted for two years and claimed the lives of dozens of mobsters, including Maranzano himself. Luciano emerged from the conflict as the undisputed leader of the New York Mafia, and he quickly set about reorganizing the organization along more efficient and modern lines.

The Rise of the Concrete Brotherhood

Under Luciano's leadership, the Concrete Brotherhood became one of the most powerful and influential Mafia clans in the United States. The organization's activities expanded beyond New York City, reaching into other major cities across the country. The Concrete Brotherhood also established close ties to other powerful Mafia clans, including the Genovese crime family and the Gambino crime family.

The Concrete Brotherhood's strength was based on its ability to control key industries in New York City, including construction, garbage collection, and the garment industry. The organization also had a strong presence in the city's nightlife, owning and operating numerous nightclubs, restaurants, and gambling dens.

The Commission

In 1931, Luciano established the Commission, a governing body for the American Mafia. The Commission was designed to resolve disputes between the different Mafia clans and to prevent another Castellammarese War. The Concrete Brotherhood was one of the most powerful members of the Commission, and it played a major role in shaping the policies of the American Mafia.

The RICO Act

In 1970, the United States Congress passed the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). The RICO Act was designed to combat organized crime by allowing prosecutors to charge criminals with racketeering, even if they had not been convicted of specific criminal acts.

The RICO Act has been a powerful tool in the fight against organized crime, and it has been used to dismantle numerous Mafia clans, including the Concrete Brotherhood. In 1985, the Concrete Brotherhood's boss, Carmine Galante, was convicted under the RICO Act and sentenced to life in prison. Galante's conviction marked the beginning of the end for the Concrete Brotherhood, and the organization has never fully recovered from his loss.

The Concrete Brotherhood is a reminder of the dark side of the American dream. It is a story of power, corruption, and violence. But it is also a story of survival and resilience. The Concrete Brotherhood has managed to survive for over a century, despite the efforts of law enforcement to dismantle it. The organization's legacy is a testament to the power of organized crime in the United States.

This book is a must-read for anyone who is interested in organized crime, the Mafia, or the history of New York City. It is a chilling and fascinating account of one of the most powerful criminal organizations in American history.
