During the tumultuous years of Mao Zedong's rule in China, the arts were subjected to strict censorship and control. But even in this repressive environment, a group of courageous artists found ways to express themselves, using their paintings as a form of subtle resistance.

Painting by Candlelight in Mao's China is the first comprehensive study of this hidden history of art. Through meticulous research and interviews with the artists themselves, author Julia F. Andrews reveals how these painters used their work to critique the government, explore forbidden subjects, and preserve Chinese cultural traditions.

The book features a stunning collection of reproductions of paintings from the period, many of which have never been seen before. These works offer a glimpse into the lives of ordinary Chinese people during a time of great upheaval, and they provide a unique perspective on the complex relationship between art and politics.

Andrews's groundbreaking study is a must-read for anyone interested in Chinese art, history, or the power of art to resist oppression.
