Early Life and Apprenticeship

Born in Boston in 1706, Franklin's formative years were marked by an insatiable curiosity and a thirst for knowledge. Although his formal education was limited, he dedicated himself to self-improvement, spending countless hours reading and experimenting in his father's candle-making shop. At the age of 12, Franklin was apprenticed to his brother James, a printer, where he honed his writing and printing skills, which would later prove instrumental in his career as a publisher and political activist.

The Philadelphia Experiment

In 1723, at the age of 17, Franklin left Boston and made his way to Philadelphia, where he established himself as a successful printer and publisher. It was during this time that he conducted his famous "Philadelphia Experiment," which demonstrated the electrical nature of lightning. By flying a kite during a thunderstorm, he drew down electricity from the clouds, proving that lightning was not a divine force but a natural phenomenon that could be controlled and studied.

Inventor and Scientist

Franklin's inquisitive mind and inventive spirit led him to make numerous scientific discoveries and inventions throughout his life. He developed the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, and the flexible catheter, among other innovations. His work in electricity earned him international recognition, and he was elected to the prestigious Royal Society of London in 1756.

Political Activism and Diplomacy

In addition to his scientific pursuits, Franklin also played a pivotal role in American politics and diplomacy. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress, where he was instrumental in drafting the Declaration of Independence. As the United States' first Postmaster General, he established the postal system and ensured the free flow of information throughout the colonies. Franklin also served as a diplomat to France during the Revolutionary War, where he secured critical support for the American cause.

Later Years and Legacy

After the war, Franklin returned to Philadelphia, where he continued to work on scientific and political projects. He founded the American Philosophical Society, a learned organization dedicated to the advancement of knowledge, and served as its first president. Franklin's later years were marked by his commitment to philanthropy and public service. He established the Franklin Institute, a center for scientific education, and donated money to various charitable organizations.

Benjamin Franklin died in Philadelphia in 1790 at the age of 84. His legacy extends far beyond his lifetime, as his contributions to science, politics, and American society have left an enduring mark on the world. Franklin's image graces the U.S. $100 bill, and his words and inventions continue to inspire and inform people to this day.
