Early Life

Richard Allen was born into slavery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1760. He was owned by a Quaker family, who treated him relatively well. However, Allen was still exposed to the horrors of slavery, and he developed a deep hatred of the institution.

In 1777, Allen joined the Continental Army and fought for American independence. After the war, he returned to Philadelphia and became a successful businessman. He also became involved in the Free African Society, a group that provided aid to free blacks.

Founding the AME Church

In 1787, Allen and other free blacks founded the AME Church. The church was a place where blacks could worship and fellowship without being subject to discrimination. Allen was elected the church's first bishop.

The AME Church quickly grew in size and influence. By the early 19th century, it was the largest black denomination in the United States. The church played a major role in the fight for abolition and civil rights.

Allen's Role in the Black Founding Fathers

Bishop Richard Allen was one of the most important black founding fathers. He was a leading voice in the fight for abolition and civil rights, and he founded the AME Church, which played a major role in the development of the United States. Allen's legacy is still felt today, and he is remembered as one of the most important figures in American history.

Bishop Richard Allen was a remarkable man who made a significant contribution to the United States. His story is an inspiration to us all, and it reminds us of the importance of fighting for what we believe in.
