Edward Stratemeyer was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, on October 4, 1862. He was the son of German immigrants, and his father was a successful businessman. Stratemeyer attended public schools in Elizabeth and graduated from high school in 1880. He then went to work for his father's company, but he soon realized that he did not want to follow in his father's footsteps.

In 1884, Stratemeyer moved to New York City and began working as a freelance writer. He wrote short stories, articles, and poems for a variety of magazines and newspapers. In 1889, he published his first book, The Rover Boys at School. This book was a huge success, and it launched Stratemeyer's career as a children's author.

Over the next few years, Stratemeyer wrote dozens of books for children. He created several popular series, including The Rover Boys, The Hardy Boys, and Tom Swift. In 1930, he created his most famous character, Nancy Drew. Nancy Drew is a teenage detective who solves mysteries with the help of her friends.

Nancy Drew books have been translated into more than 30 languages and have sold more than 200 million copies worldwide. The character has been adapted into several movies, television shows, and video games. Nancy Drew is one of the most popular fictional characters of all time, and she has inspired generations of readers.

Edward Stratemeyer died in New York City on May 10, 1930. He was 67 years old. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.
