The novel opens in the spring of 1864, as the Union army advances on the Confederate capital of Richmond. Confederate soldier John Ransom is captured and sent to Andersonville prison. There, he meets Union prisoner Henry Wirz, a Swiss immigrant who has been accused of war crimes. Wirz is the commandant of Andersonville, and he runs the prison with an iron fist. The conditions at Andersonville are horrific. The prisoners are starved, beaten, and housed in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions. Disease is rampant, and death is a daily occurrence.
Ransom and Wirz are both haunted by their experiences at Andersonville. Ransom is haunted by the memories of the men he saw die, and Wirz is haunted by the guilt of his own actions. After the war, Ransom returns to his home in Georgia, but he is unable to forget his time at Andersonville. He becomes a recluse, and he spends his days writing letters to the families of the men who died at the prison.
Wirz is tried for war crimes and sentenced to death. He is hanged in Washington, D.C., in 1865. Before he is executed, Wirz writes a letter to Ransom, asking for his forgiveness. Ransom never forgives Wirz, but he does come to understand the complex and tragic circumstances that led to the horrors of Andersonville.
Andersonville Memories Andersonville Dreams is a powerful and moving novel that sheds light on one of the darkest chapters in American history. The novel is a tribute to the men who survived Andersonville, and it is a reminder of the horrors of war.
